| Description of the Qelqatani Hotel |
Qelqatani represents a territory with historical, better known as "rupestre", paintings or images in stone, located in the district of "Santa Rosa de Juli", in the province of Chucuito, a few kilometers from Mazocruz (85 Kms from Puno city). This is where the first written stones laid and gave origin to "Qelqatani". The word Quechua-Aymara means "is written" or "written stone". This paintings together with Pizacoma (Kalikantu), constitute the oldest and most remote artistic remains that the old inhabitants (hunters) of the high plateau of the Andes left us.
These remains were discovered in 1940 by Carlos de Amat Palacios, an inhabitant of these lonely places. In 1965, he took Christian Spahni, who reconstructed and reproduced on special canvases more than 1000 drawings of the art of Qelqatani after 4 months of investigation, with the help of Irma Gebert.
Why do we choose this name for the hotel?: Because this great area is a territory forgotten by the world and ignored by the "puneños" (people of Puno); a place that has been plundered, dug and depredated on several occasions by expeditions exploiting it. They cut the stone and removed the paintings, taking pieces of the art with them without caring to preserve the beautiful art in stone that is so close to us. For this reason, the name of Qelqatani was chosen, in order to promote the scenario and the areas where Qelqatani rests and to motivate the "puneños" and their visitors in the defense of the cultural heritage, which is comparable to the caves of Altamira (Spain), according to experts. Also, because Qelqatani served as a den, place of rest, refuge, housing, retirement and home for many men who were passing through the place, who left their mark in time, as our current visitors do (tourists, executives, advisory, sportsmen, etc.) at Qelqatani Hotel, by helping and supporting the development of the Region and our country.
For this reason, the Qelqatani Hotel is not just as a simple lodging establishment, since the people who work there feel a commitment to our culture. We give the best in us to help it advance, attending to the traveler or visitor excellently, offering him a home away from home, where he will find tranquility, rest, comfort, food, support and concern for the best stay at all times, making his visit memorable forever.
With all this, we want to pay a silent tribute to the man of Qelqatani, the origin of our culture
