Boston: A Taste of Europe Across the Pond

Boston is arguably the most European of all American cities. With influences from Colonial England and more lately European Capitals creating a vibrant New England Capital.

Boston is a walking-friendly city with the famous Freedom Trail actually mapped out on the pavements. It's well worth a walk from the start not least for all the local restaurants and hostelries you pass en route. Talking of holstelries a visit to Boston would not be complete without having a couple of beers in the famous Cheers Bar. They might not know your name these days but they can certainly sell you a T Shirt or beer glass from the gift shop.
If it's shopping you're after then Faneuil Hall, also known as Quincy Market is the place to be. It features a host of stores and stalls offering souveniers, clothes shopping, antiquities and a wide variety of food options.

If you've had enough of walking then a great way to see the city is on board one of the Boston Duck Tours. The tour (pictured left) takes you through the sites of Boston with a twist. The amphibous vehicle spends as much time in the water as on the land giving a unique perspective of the Boston skyline.

If sports is more your game then you've got a host of options. Fenway Park is home of Baseball's Boston Red Sox with the season running from March to September. Basketball and Ice Hockey are both played at the Boston Garden. The Boston Celtics play Basketball during October and April and the Boston Bruins play Ice Hockey between October and April. And don't forget the hugely succesful New England Patriots playing Americal Football at Gilette Stadium. For all sporting events it's worth trying to obtain tickets in advance. However a good hotel concierge will always manage to get you tickets for a fee.

"Just enjoy it! "
Ms M Custy of Limerick (Mature adult friends) stayed: Midtown Hotel, Feb 2008

"I did a trolley ride round the city. This is great no matter what the weather and there are plenty of stops to get on and off at and lots to see and do when you get off. Eat out in the city, lots of lovely restaurants to visit. "
Mrs E Cowie of Livingston (Solo leisure) stayed: Bulfinch Hotel, Feb 2008

"Walk as much as possible to take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful city. "
Mr J Devereux of Fleet (Young couple) stayed: Lenox Hotel, Dec 2007

"Buying a 5 day ticket for the metro is a must. In the winter the weather can be mild on one day and extremely cold 2 days later so take warm clothes. "
Mr D Magee of Belfast (Mature couple) stayed: Holiday Inn Boston Somerville Hotel, Nov 2007

"Take plenty of layers with you if going in November onwards as it's freezing! "
Miss H Killick of Plymouth (Young adult friends) stayed: Midtown Hotel, Nov 2007

" It is a nice location, to be out of the city centre and prices, but with hindsight we should have chosen somewhere in same price range closer, perhaps near the airport where you can use the subway. It cost us $40 from bus station to hotel in a taxi. And $20 from hotel to nearest subway station to return to city centre. Loved the market place area, particularly all the little eating joints, great atmosphere. The "hop on/ off bus is well worth doing, but if you are going to do just ONE thing, go to the JFK museum, easy to reach by subway. It's overwhelming, especially for someone of my generation "
Mrs C Jenkins of Woolacombe (Mature adult friends) stayed: Holiday Inn Boston Peabody Hotel, Oct 2007

"Yes, ask if the hotel has public transport ( not Taxis) at walking distance so you don't waste money on taxis. "
Mrs S Paliwal of Birmingham (Mature couple) stayed: Holiday Inn Brookline Hotel, Oct 2007

"Comfortable shoes. Hire a car and visit an outlet mall and make your money go further "
Mr R Mcroberts of Newtownards (Mature couple) stayed: Holiday Inn Brookline Hotel, Oct 2007

"If you stay outside the City as we did and use the t system (trains) buy a "Charlie Ticket" to save money. "
Mr M Trollope of Peterborough (Mature couple) stayed: Best Western Adams Inn Hotel, Oct 2007

"Go on the trolley or duck tour before deciding what to see and do as so much to cram in and be brave and try the 't' "
Mrs L Newton of Hyde (Mature couple) stayed: Best Western Adams Inn Hotel, Sep 2007

"Accept that the people in Boston don't like to be told they are wrong or that something maybe wrong with a service they provide. Great for shopping "
Mrs T Foster of Dublin (Family with young children) stayed: Best Western Adams Inn Hotel, Aug 2007

"If you stay at the Midtown Hotel get a room near receptionsome of the room are a long walk "
Mrs E George of Hemel Hempstead (Mature couple) stayed: Midtown Hotel, Jun 2007
