Smaller and more authentic than Prague

Whether its medieval architecture and cobble stone streets you're after or extravagant Art Nouveau buildings and manicured 19th-century parks, Riga has plenty of visual stimulation for all tastes. Explore what's left of the city's Soviet legacy or take a tour of Dome Cathedral, the largest house of worship in the Baltics.

Our customer's tips and city guides for Riga:

"Taxi drivers will cheat you day and night - insist they switch on their meters. "
Mr A Macdonald of Portree (Solo leisure) stayed: Albert Hotel, Jul 2007

"Eat at the Zeppelin market because it makes a great lunch with local food. People look grumpy but when you speak they are all smiles and helpful. This is a very safe city for tourists. I just wish the Occupation museum was open before May. Oh well, a good excuse to revisit. "
Mrs F Black of Aberdeen (Solo leisure) stayed: Slokas Ok Hotel, Apr 2007

"Not really.... Just enjoy the moment "
Mr O Njoku of Harrow (Young couple) stayed: Avitar Hotel, Mar 2007

More customer tips and city guides for Riga:

"The city is completely no smoking but they do have smoking bins in the street, make sure you use them as the fines for dropping cigarete buts on the floor are quite steep. Keep together if you are in a group as there are quite e few dark alleys with some undesireables lurking about. "
Miss L Kirk of Wirral (Mature adult friends) stayed: Balthostel Hotel, Feb 2007

"Riga is small and compact city and quite easy to walk around and if you travel in winter make sure you wrap up warm with many layers , hats and gloves as it gets so cold it hurts you to breath in at night. I would also take some water proof shoes for trudjing around in the snow. I would also suggest steering well clear of the Irish and English bars and there lairy stag do's and head for the Skyline bar at the Revel Hotel Latvija for an absolutly amazing view of the city and some reasonably priced drinks to. I would also suggest Dome Steakhouse, just of Dome Square for lovely fillet steak and sides for about £8.00 and DaDa in the Galerija Center where for £4.00 you sit down choose your sauce and then go and fill you bowl with delicous ingredients and meat and get it all cooked up for you by a Terriake chef and then delivered to your table. Also for the more adventurous I would suggest jumping into a cab and going to Regro s at 31 Daugavgrivas, where you will go down into a former soviet bunker and can fire off Glocks and AK47s till your hearts content. "
Miss L Hollis of Syston (Young couple) stayed: Boutique Hotel Viesturs, Nov 2006

"Stear clear of the strip bars,if your that way inclined.we heard a few horror stories!oh and don't attempt to bring excess cigarettes into the U.k,customs will take them from you "
Mr R Rawson of Manchester (Solo leisure) stayed: City Hotel Bruninieks, Nov 2006
