The Capital Of The Province And A Busy Seaport

Situated in the Bay of Coruña, from the British viewpoint, La Coruña is famous as the port from which the Spanish Armada sailed against England in 1588. Revenge was swift and sure as Sir Francis Drake almost totally destroyed the port in 1589. In 1809, at the very beginning of the Peninsular War, British forces fought a dramatic rearguard action to protect the withdrawal of land forces from La Coruña. During that battle General Sir John Moore was killed and later buried in La Coruña.
Tower of Hercules Lighthouse

One of the most famous city sights is the The Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hércules), an ancient Roman lighthouse located on a peninsula about 1.5 miles outside the city of A Coruña, Galicia, in present-day northwestern Spain. The lighthouse is almost 1900 years old, standing 185 feet high, overlooking the North Atlantic coast of Spain. It is the oldest active Roman lighthouse in the world.
