Description of the Pennsylvania Hotel

The Pennsylvania hotel is a classic landmark hotel once favoured by the famous, with Glen Miller composing the tune Pennsylvania 6500 to help him remember his favourite hotel's phone number. The phone number is still the same but the Pennsylvania now offers good value accommodation to the budget conscious traveller who wants to be in the heart of the action. The hotel offers a selection of restaurants, a gift shop, newstand and travel and theatre booking desk. All 1705 rooms are air conditioned but note that some rooms are in need of renovation. The renovation program carried out at the Pennsylvania is nearly 80% complete. Whilst we will always endeavour to secure a renovated room, this cannot be guaranteed as the hotel is often fully booked out. The un-renovated rooms are tired - we would rate them as 1 star - and may be unsuitable for the more discerning guest.

Rooms of type Superior are always guaranteed to be renovated rooms.

Minumum Check in Age for Lead Guest: 18

Location of the Pennsylvania Hotel

The Pennsylvania Hotel is arguably the best location of all the budget hotels in New York. Situated opposite Madison Square Garden the hotel is close to New York City's Famous Fashion District and within walking distance to the Empire State Building and Broadway. Macy's Herald Square department store, the world's largest, is one short block away.

"
"On arrival the reception is very grand and staff were very helpful. The bedrooms are basic but were kept clean by daily maid service with fresh towels and linen. (Being that we spent about 16 hours in the hotel in four days). Location is spot on being dead opposite Madison Square Garden and two blocks from the Empire State Building and Macy's and a short taxi ride from the rest of the attractions. Would definately recommend friends to stay at the Hotel and when I return will more thank likely stay here again. "

"We Stayed at the Pennsylvania hotel for a week from the 30th of October, Overall the hotel was of a average standard, quite a big room for the two of us, now too congested considering we had the french marathon team staying there, Room was basic but cleanish (needed updating), beds very comfortable which is just what you need after a hectic day in New York Godsend it being very near Penn Station (if you can't walk too far) and being opposite the Garden is a bonus if you've got tickets to an event there If you go out in times square and come back late, a taxi is less than £5 which is great value "
The best thing about Pennsylvania was:"It's central location and for some people not being right in times square would be a bonus "

"
"Three of us stayed at this hotel in early May. We,re 3 guys all in our late 20,S. The hotel is in a great location directly opposite Maddison square Garden, 5-10 mins walk from Times square. We spent very little time in the hotel just sleeping, Having a shower and changing clothes. The room was small, and there was no view but the bed sheets were changed every day as were the towels and the room was cleaned. What more do you want considering it was only about $70 each per night. We didn,t eat anything there but why would you stay in the hotel and eat when you,re in nyc ? Overall good value for money and I would use the hotel again. "

"The hotel initially looked great. The doormen were very friendly and helpful and so were the people on reception. The only thing that was bad were the rooms. We had 4 rooms booked and when we booked was promised 2 double beds but we ended up getting 1 kingsize or 1 double bed. Also the standard of the rooms wasn't so great. But the location is ideal and we didn;t spend much time in them as we were sighseeing, shopping and partying at night so if I was to cme back to ny again I would definitely think about staying here.........if I get a better room. The wall paper was peeling, there was no headboard on the beds, the carpet was stained, and in the bathroom the suface of the bath was only some 70% intact. The hotel was the cheapest decent looking one we could find that wasn't miles away from the centre. The lobby is beautiful, however it deteriorates as you make your way to your room. Just a little messy & some small touches could be done here & there to the decor. The room is basic. Bathroom was clean & shower worked well. The room was warm & there was a tv. The bed was comfortable. The room just lacked that little extra touch, (messy wallpaper in the corners, wonky radiator, but to be fair, who spends all their time in a hotel room when visiting NYC.....we certainly didn't so it suited us down to the ground!"

"The thing with any hotel in New York, is that if you're looking to spend a lot of time in a hotel room - you're in the wrong city! The Pennsylvania, although not the height of luxury, has been a great base for our New York holidays on 3 occasions. The staff are helpful and willing, the rooms are all above average size for the centre of New York and the hotel's facilities are better than you'd expect. Each room we've stayed in has been clean, spacious and whilst facilities in each vary (some have a fridge, walk in wardrobe / 3 beds) all are fine for the amount of time you spend in your room! What's more important, is the range and quantity of great bars, restaurants, tourist attractions and shops only a stone's throw from the hotel. The hotel's great - but what you're really getting is affordable above-average accomodation in the Big Apple!"
