Located in midtown Manhattan, within walking distance to the United Nations and the fabulous Fifth Avenue shops, The Alex Hotel is a 33-story, custom-built hotel just opened in 2004. The lobby is an Asian-inspired retreat, with bamboo gardens flanking the entryway, orchids arranged in tube vases, and votive candles lit at nightfall. The seating area includes a gas fireplace, velvet and leather settees. David Rockwell, designer of the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, created the hotel's soft-toned, understated, and sophisticated look. Every piece of furniture in the public areas and guestrooms was designed specifically for the hotel. Rooms have a serene ambience, with ultra-comfortable leather furnishings; versatile wall units; soft velour curtains and "rainfall" showers in the bathrooms Just off the lobby, the two-level restaurant, Riingo, is one of Midtown's most stylish dining destinations. The hotel's 24-hour fitness center provides resistance-training and cardio equipment, along with free weights. Each cardio machine has its own flat-screen TV monitor/DVD player.
