The City on the Bay

San Francisco is renowned as the cultural Capital of California. With beautiful bay views, historic Victorian mansions, varied and vibrant neighbourhoods and great shopping, San Francisco has something for everyone. Union Square is in the heart of the city and offers exclusive shops, galleries and restaurants. South of Market or SoMa district is an exciting area including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and a choice of dining.
Fisherman's Wharf is a popular tourist destination for watching the sea lions at Pier 39, taking a tour to Alcatraz, shopping, dining or simply enjoying the magnificent vista of the Bay. The city is easy to get around and a cable car ride is a fun way to cover the hills and streets of San Francisco.

Our customer's tips and city guides for San Francisco:

"You must stay at this hotel if you like sea food, too many places to choose from. Easy to board the ferry to tour the bay or the hop on/hop off bus tour for a larger view of the city. "
Mr K Bertram of North Shields (Family with teenage children) stayed: Sheraton Fishermans Wharf Hotel, Jun 2008

"Staying in the quieter financial district you are outside the main tourist areas of union square and fisherman's wharf but right on the cable car route and only a short walk from both areas. "
Mr R Gent of Kidderminster (Mature couple) stayed: Omni San Francisco Hotel, Mar 2008

"Alcatraz night tour is good and seeing the lights of the skyline is a must. Drive out to Point lobos on the 49 mile scenic route and visit the Cliff house for lunch/dinner for the most amazing views of the pacific. Union Square shopping is great but beware walking about at night as there are lots of undesirable people hanging about! Cable cars are good fun but if you need to get somewhere quickly and there's more than two of you, take a cab, it's cheaper and quicker. "
Miss R Coates of Braintree (Young couple) stayed: Argonaut Hotel, Feb 2008

More customer tips and city guides for San Francisco:

"We stayed 2 nights at airport hotel not wanting to carry luggage. Transport in to town easy but a waste of time . next time we would stay intown I think.but from hotel we took free airport transport and thengot onto the BARTtrainto go into town.. Then a tram to Pier 39for instance. All quite simple but more time consuming than necessary. We had been recommended tovisit Alcatraz which was historically interesting if grim butyou geta good feel of the bayand the islands strategic importance. Wander around Chinatown. great. And also Seniors getdiscounts on trams.. We were given a return ticket for 50cents.. About 25p! Also when traveling by the bart/metro/undergroundtrain.. Buy a ticket with enough moneyon it to do several journeys .. a bit like an Oyster in London.. you use it till it runs out.. Quite simple.and I was usually asked for a photo id when I used a credit card..as a matter of course.! They havent gone onto the chip and pinsystem like the uk "

Mr C Williams of Llanelli (Mature couple) stayed: Fairmont Hotel, Aug 2007

"Did not visit San Mateo, but would advise those wishing to visit San Francisco to enquire about public transport. All parking is expensive if staying any length of time, street parking is mostly short term. "
